630pm

Room 142, LSU School of Natural Resources

For more information: brsierraclub@gmail.com

America’s environmental laws and protection, the result of decades of citizen advocacy, governmental action, and scientific research, are under attack by a hostile Congress and White House. Learn how ordinary citizens can stand up for clean air, clean water, and our public lands!

The LSU Student Sierra Coalition works to educate the campus on conservation and environmental issues through a combination of guest speakers, recreational outings, and service projects (https://lsu.collegiatelink.net/organization/sierrastudentcoalition/about).
The Baton Rouge Group of the Sierra Club is a member-based volunteer organization, and is part of the state wide Delta Chapter of the Sierra Club (http://brsierraclub.blogspot.com/).

Saving Whooping Cranes in Louisiana

Sara Zimorski, biologist with Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, will give a presentation on efforts to save the Whooping Cranes in Louisiana, particularly their latest success: the birth of two baby whoopers!

The recent discovery of two other whoopers found shot in southwest La. not long thereafter will animate our discussion. This setback amid success in the struggle to successfully establish a thriving, self-sustaining population of this majestic species, offers a chance to reflect on the program and how it will succeed.

History of LA Coast

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. . .

History Sheds Light on the Future

Wednesday, June 23

Dr Richard Condrey shared his study of the historic gulf coastline and its lessons for repairing it.

At the June general meeting of the Baton Rouge Group of the Sierra Club members and visitors learned  the history of the gulf coast. His study looked at maps like this one and sailors’ journals dating back to the 1700s. After studying the explorers descriptions and navigation records, he could overlay the old maps on a current map.  Dr. Condrey concludes that the coastline has been shrinking at approximately the same rate since the 1800s! Hurricanes and oil exploration haven’t altered the rate of shrinkage in our coastline. The change is the same now as it has been for the last 200 years.
